Interested in creating orienteering maps?

Orienteering Nova Scotia is fortunate to have Jeff Teutsch, owner of Navigation Sports, in the area this summer. Jeff is hard at work creating maps for the 2026 Canadian Orienteering Championships, and has agreed to host an Introductory Fieldwork course for those interested in developing skills to create orienteering maps. The first course, described below, will be offered on August 9th, and will concentrate on a schoolyard/park map. A second course is anticipated at the end of August, and will focus on forest mapping.

This course is designed primarily for mappers with little or no mapping experience that are wanting to learn some basic fieldwork techniques so you can get outside and practice mapping. If you are wondering if this course is for you, you can email jeff@navigationsports.ca.

INFORMATION/REGISTRATION

Course Description:

This 6 hour module will teach participants the basics of fieldwork. This module has both classroom and field components.

In this module you will practice the following:

  • Preparing your project for fieldwork
  • Using the software and hardware for fieldwork
  • Making decisions in the field:
    • Generalisation
    • Classification of features
    • Locating features
  • Post-fieldwork drawing
COST: $120*

(Orienteering Nova Scotia members may be eligible for partial reimbursement of this cost - stay tuned; details to be added shortly).

Participants should have previously participated in a Using Open Orienteering Mapper or Using OCAD class or have previous experience mapping with Open Orienteering Mapper. Additionally, we highly recommend taking the Starting a Map Project at some point if you have not already taken it. If you have not taken these classes you will still be able to get lots of useful information out of this class but might find it a little harder to put it all into action. These classes will next be offered in the fall or winter and you can take them.

(Note: One of the class participants can assist participants who have not taken the classes noted above during the class, if you have minimal experience but still wish to take advantage of this opportunity).
